Cooling Strategy Study

Project Overview

Goldman Sachs engaged CCG to conduct Cooling Strategy Study to accomplish the following objectives:

  • Identify the most promising technical approaches to providing appropriate cooling for high density computer environments
  • Refine the two most promising approaches so that aspects of cost, constructability, flexibility, scalability, reliability and IT operations are optimized
  • Apply this refined solution model to the planning of current and future Data Centers

In the first stage of the study, multiple cooling approaches were identified and evaluated by a weighted matrix of criteria, and the resultant ratings summarized.

The study allowed the Owner to gain a nuanced understanding of the impact of cooling system selections on various other metrics, including such dimensions as area requirements, load density, and cooling energy effectiveness.

Detailed studies of equipment layout were developed to support the analysis, and a variety of deployment options presented.

Extensive Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) modeling of various physical arrangements and failure scenarios was performed, providing additional understanding of system performance.
